Day 24 Fly to Kathmandu • Pashupatinath • Explore Kathmandu - Nov 30

We drive this morning to the Chitwan-Bharatpur Airport for our ► Flight Back to Kathmandu.

We are returning to  Kathmandu Tribhuvan Airport and the Gokarna Forest Lodge where we had some free time to readjust to bustling city of Kathmandu.  Tonight, we are having a  Special Dress-up Farewell Dinner with our fellow travelers.

Tomorrow we leave for the third leg of our adventure. While Nepal & the Mystical Himalayas adventure comes to a close, as we begin our new discoveries in Tibet. Tomorrow morning we depart Kathmandu on a flight to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, arriving in the afternoon. Upon arrival we transfer to our hotel and have time to relax (it turns out not too much relaxing) and to adjust to the altitude of 12,000 feet.

There are eight of us who are continuing the adventure to Tibet. We have a special Chinese travel document that allows us entry into Tibet. Since Avash, our Nepali Trip Leader, is not going with us to Tibet the group elects Gail as our trip leader to get us to Tibet.

Following the Xinhai Revolution against the Qing dynasty in 1912, Qing soldiers were disarmed and escorted out of Tibet. The region declared its independence in 1913 without recognition by the subsequent Chinese Republican government. Later, Lhasa took control of the western part of Xikang, China. The region maintained its autonomy until 1951 when, following the Battle of Chamdo, Tibet became incorporated into the People's Republic of China, and the previous Tibetan government was abolished in 1959 after a failed uprising. Today, China governs western and central Tibet as the Tibet Autonomous Region while the eastern areas are now mostly ethnic autonomous prefectures within Sichuan, Qinghai and other neighboring provinces. There are tensions regarding Tibet's political status and dissident groups that are active in exile. Tibetan activists in Tibet have reportedly been arrested or tortured. The Chinese government is transferring thousands of ethnic Chinese daily into Tibet to dilute the population. Tibetan people are greatly oppressed with very few freedoms. Tibetans cannot travel or leave the area They connect get a passport or get jobs that only go to the Chinese being forced to immigrate to Tibet.

At the end of our Tibet adventure we will return again to Kathmandu, where Advash will be waiting, and the Gokarna Forest Lodge for one night before our trip home to the U. S.
